What to Bring

This post discusses what to bring, and what NOT to bring, for Flat Land training sessions.

What to Bring

Required Medications. Participants are not required to divulge personal medical information, however; advising the instructor of any special needs or conditions may be helpful. For example, Flat Land recently conducted an Intro to Kayak class for a family unit in which a member shared she had a sting allergy. We incorporated her condition into the training and the family performed a walk-through of how it might respond should she be stung while on the water.

Drinking water. Participants should bring drinking water preferably in a reusable bottle. On extremely hot and humid days consider also an electrolyte drink.

Sunblock. Flat Land encourages participants to bring and use sunblock. Sunburn can be more intense due to the reflection off the water.

Food and snacks. Lunch is NOT provided in any Flat Land course. Courses over four hours will have time allotted for lunch. For classes at Yorkville, there are several restaurants within walking distance. For other locations participants should bring food in water-tight containers. Consider bringing your favorite snacks that provide quick energy between meals.

Dry Clothes. Kayaking is a water sport and one should expect to get wet. Having a set of dry clothes into which to change at the conclusion of class is recommended. A blanket, large towel or robe may be helpful in maintaining modesty.

What NOT to bring (onto the water)

Alcohol/Illicit Drugs. Participants are asked to refrain from drug or alcohol use prior to and during class.

Pets. It should be obvious that pets should not be brought to a water-borne training class.
